Techniques

Calligraphy with a pointed pen is all about pressure and angles. The pressure of the calligrapher’s hand on the pen nib is what produces the desirable thick-and-thin lines of the letters. The angle at which the pen is held creates an elegant slant and gives shape to the letters.

Glide the pen nib gently in the direction of the split in the tines to reduce ink splatters across the page!

  • Tip: Pay attention to how much pressure you apply to the pen, as well as how tightly you grip it. Your hand shouldn’t hurt after a practice session of calligraphy. Hold the pen lightly, and apply gentle pressure.

Handling the Pen

The movement of the pen nib must always align with the slant of the letter being drawn. Creating beautiful, thick-and-thin sections of letterforms is all about the amount of pressure you place on the nib. Since pointed pen nibs are flexible, applying more pressure causes the tines in the nib to spread, creating a thicker line. Therefore, apply less pressure for a thin line.
